S.M.A.R.T. Goals: The Hallmark of Successful People

Ask any successful person or business leader how they got where they are today and no doubt they will tell you it was the goal setting exercise that they were taught years ago.  The most important point to remember when setting goals is that they have a time frame or a deadline. It is said that only 20% of the world’s population set’s written goals! Spend a bit of time thinking about this: most people who do set goals are the ones who are now extremely wealthy. The nicest thing about goal setting is that they can be flexible to suit the changing path a person wants to follow until they reach the top of their field. Holland Resource can help employees and staff to make decisions towards setting realistic, manageable goals.

As a persons career progresses, self-development becomes important as the person starts to visualize themselves in a top position. Leadership development becomes the course to study and performance management becomes all consuming in your current position. Managers need specific plans for managing their particular departments and the staff who report to them. And it is so much better to have a plan mapped out for you than trying to get where the company wants to be through trial and error. Holland Resource has everything an organization needs in order to map out its future path to success.

When writing down goals, you have to do this in a “smart” manner and think them through to the last detail.  S.M.A.R.T. means Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-sensitive. Write down and see in your mind exactly where you want to go in life – ie I want to be MD of Microsoft. Your mind locks onto this desire. Every couple of months, measure whether the goal is closer or not. Make sure the goal is actually humanly possible to achieve. Be honest and make sure the goal is realistic. And set a time limit. A goal is worth achieving for your own personal development – ask Holland Resource to come in and guide your organization towards SMART goals.
